1980 Talking Head’s Concert Surfaces

In 1980, Talking Heads were on the heels of Remain In Light, the band’s fourth studio album and arguably their best. On November 4th of that year, the alternative rock legends played a memorable 14-song set at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, one of the few venues at the time to have installed a multi-camera video system. Footage from the performance has recently surfaced online.

With high quality audio and video, the clip is an excellent document of a band at their peak. While not as flashy as Talking Heads’ famous Stop Making Sense concert film, this set is just as energetic and maybe even more visceral. It contains edgier versions of “Warning Sign” and “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)”, along with a rousing rendition of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River”, before ending the show with “The Great Curve”. David Byrne proves to be a stellar and magnetic frontman even without his gigantic suit, while the rest of the band (Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth, and Chris Frantz) are deftly backed by guitarist Adrian Belew, keyboardist Bernie Worrell, bassist Busta Cherry Jones, percussionist Steve Scales, and vocalist Dolette McDonald. Take a trip back to the ’80s and watch the entire concert above.
